The Flippin’ Frog® XL Replacement Chlorine Cartridge is the consumable cartridge for the Flippin’ Frog XL Pool System — the larger version of FROG’s floating chlorinator, sized for pools holding 5,000 to 10,000 gallons. Each XL cartridge typically delivers 3–4 weeks of sanitizing before the system flips over, signaling it’s time for a replacement.
If your pool is in the 5,000–10,000 gallon range, the XL cartridge is the right consumable for you. The original (smaller) Flippin’ Frog cartridge is sized for pools 2,000 gallons and up, but the chlorine load it carries isn’t enough to keep a larger pool properly sanitized. The XL holds more pre-filled chlorine and is calibrated to release at a rate that matches the larger water volume — which is the difference between a pool that stays clear and one that fights cloudiness all season.
Inside the cartridge is Trichloroisocyanuric acid (Trichlor) at 99% concentration, delivering 90% available chlorine — the same stabilized chlorine used in most pool tablet products. Stabilized means the chlorine has cyanuric acid built in to protect it from being burned off by UV sunlight, which is essential for outdoor pool use. The cartridge releases chlorine gradually as your pool circulates water through the dispenser, holding a steady sanitizer level for weeks instead of the spikes and dips of manual tab dosing.
Why the XL Cartridge Matters for Bigger Pools: Sanitizing 8,000 gallons of pool water is fundamentally a different problem from sanitizing 3,000 gallons. The XL cartridge holds enough chlorine to meet that demand for 3–4 weeks at a time without running short — which means fewer cartridge swaps, less risk of running out between trips to the pool, and more consistent water clarity through the season. Trying to make a smaller cartridge work in a larger pool is the most common cause of “my Flippin’ Frog isn’t working” complaints.
