The job of a clarifier is different from the job of a sanitizer. Your sanitizer (chlorine, bromine, minerals) kills bacteria; a clarifier polishes the water by gathering up microscopic particles too small for your filter to catch on its own — things like body oils, sunscreen residue, dust, pollen, and other fine debris that gradually accumulate even in well-sanitized pools.
